There once was a chicken so white and so fair
He set out one day to cross the road with a dare.
But then a terrible sight caused his feathers to quiver,
A coal mine at the far side made him shiver and shiver.

The coal dust in the air soon caused his feathers to turn gray,
So gray that he blended into night, swift on his way.

Though the poor little fellow has now blended in well,
It's clear to see why his feathers no longer are white as a shell.
