Rotating bodies ...may flip spontaneously ! What about the Earth - can it flip too ? - The mystery know as Dzhanivekov's effect and why the Soviets kept it in secret.

it is all about stability / instability of steady states -

The sold body rotation in 3D is described by the Euler equations... they are nonlinear in fact - in spirit of the ingenious 3 diffential equations of the Lorentz system producing the "strange " Lorentz attractor ...and the non-linearity terms are indeed proportional to the difference in the moments of inertia along 3 different axis. So if those are small , the nonlinear coupling between different rotational degrees of freedom is small too, and consequently - no chaos, .no sporadic tumbling , etcetera.

So - as seen from these equations the symmetry will save the world !!! If I1=I2=I3 - the nonlinear coupling => 0 and no way our planet tumbles !!! - in other plain words for the general audience : Красота Спасет Мир !!!

But the Russians kept Dzanibeckov's effect in secret for 10 years ... While our Earth could
tumble at any moment …. as they hoped ( ?) .

Yes, that is what Euler's equations and Landau and Lifshitz's ' textbook tell us. The Earth, even though being not a perfect sphere, like many astronomical objects, spins already around the axis with the maximum moment of inertia, which is a stable rotation. Only rotation around the axis with an intermediate momentum of inertia is unstable. The notion of beauty saving the world is based on the fact that asymmetry must be large enough to force a flip.
