Gold trades near record peak on weak US dollar

Feb 24 (Reuters) - Gold prices edged up on Monday to trade near its record peak, helped by a weaker U.S. dollar, while investors looked ahead to a key inflation report due later this week to gauge the Federal Reserve's interest rate trajectory.

"The dollar's move lower this month has enabled spot gold to be kept around its record highs, supported by a surge of inflows into bullion-backed exchange traded funds," said Han Tan, Exinity Group chief market analyst.

The threat of a trade war, induced by U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff plans pushed gold above the historical $2,950/oz mark last week and brought the $3,000/oz level into investor focus more than ever before.

Last week, Trump threatened fresh tariffs over the next month or sooner, adding lumber and forest products to previously announced plans to impose duties on imported cars, semiconductors and pharmaceuticals.

US manufacturers see higher metal prices as tariffs near

Reuters) - The price of the steel Glen Calder buys for his small machinery factory in South Carolina has spiked over 15% in the last two weeks, while Brian Nelson’s factory halfway across the country in Illinois can’t get its suppliers to quote him current prices at all.

"They’re waiting for the tariffs," said Nelson.

While President Donald Trump’s 25% tariffs on steel and aluminum are only slated to start on March 12, the action is already reverberating through the network of producers and builders that rely on the metals to make their goods. And not in a good way.

Tump campaigned on a promise to use tariffs to boost domestic manufacturers and also eyes the added revenue as a way to offset lost inflows to federal coffers from his planned tax cuts. But levies on imported steel and aluminum, while aiding U.S. mills by allowing them to raise their own prices, quickly translate into higher prices for the layers of producers who buy and process those metals into refrigerators, cars and combines.

According to the National Association of Realtors (NAR), U.S. existing-home sales declined in January 2025, with three major regions experiencing a downturn while the Midwest remained stable. Year-over-year, sales increased in three regions but held steady in the South.

Total existing-home sales--including single-family homes, townhomes, condominiums, and co-ops--dropped 4.9% from December, reaching a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 4.08 million in January. However, sales were up 2.0% from the 4 million reported in January 2024.

Mortgage rates have remained stubbornly high for months, despite multiple short-term interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve," said NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun. "Coupled with elevated home prices, affordability remains a significant challenge for buyers."

Expert Opinions on Trump’s Plan

Food costs are one of the biggest variables when addressing inflation and economic volatility. According to the University of Michigan’s consumer sentiment survey, a majority of American consumers say that inflation will rise and expectations of inflation over the next year have soared. The February 2025 survey said that inflation this year will be 4.3%, up sharply from 3.3% the previous month.

Two certified financial planners (CFPs) offered insight into the various aspects of Trump’s plan. Here’s what they shared.

Energy Production

According to Lamar Watson, founder of Dream Financial Planning, increasing energy production isn’t likely to have the effect Trump wants. He pointed out, “U.S. energy production is at all-time highs and it hasn’t kept energy prices down. Major oil companies don’t want [the price] to go too low because it will lower the value of one of their biggest assets, proven reserves of oil and natural gas. [Their] primary goal is to maximize shareholder value, not lower prices for consumers.”

Plus, even if increased production did lower the price of fuel, shoppers can’t expect to see much change in the stores. “Energy cost probably accounts for less than 10% of the price of groceries. The largest cost for most companies is labor,” he added.

Watson also noted that, in general, “Lowering energy prices will not be easy. Oil is a global commodity, and the president has a limited ability to influence the price of oil and other commodities.”
